Future Scientist Training Program (November 23, Oyama PL and Nakade)

#Invited lecture

On November 23, 2024, Project Leader Oyama, Ms. Nakade, Research Associate, Ms. Takekoshi from the Public Relations Office of RIHN, and Mr. Onogawa gave a lecture at the Kyoto City Science Center for Youth’s Future Scientist Training Program.

In the limited time of 70 minutes, we talked about the problems of desertification and food shortage in the Sahel region of West Africa, greening efforts using waste, and the importance of nutrient cycles between urban and rural areas.

Sixteen 4th to 6th graders from elementary school participated in the event. They were truly the scientists of the future. After that, we measured the temperature and TDR soil moisture of six tubs of Chikyuken compost (dry compost type) material, analyzed the soil color with a soil color book, and recorded smells and other things we noticed. The survey tools we use are the same as those used by researchers at RIHN. We didn’t cut any corners.

This was a valuable opportunity for us to communicate the objectives of our project with the future scientists.
