Due to the coup d’état which occurred in Niger in July 2023, it has been impossible for the Japanese project members to visit their field site, but thanks to the tireless effort of our local staff, soil and vegetation survey are being conducted continuously. The Ministry of Environment and the Fight against Desertification (ME/LCD) of the Government of Niger has also participated in the project. They have collected scientific data on the changes that have occurred in the vegetation and soil in our test sites, after the second rainy season after we put the waste on the site.
After 25 years of continuous work, the local youth have learned our survey techniques and are carrying out the surveys, allowing us to continue to collect data. The staffs of the Ministry are also learning how to survey vegetation and soil. The small circle to fight desertification is beginning to grow.
