Final Debriefing Session held for JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project (August 8, Venue: Niamey City)

The final debriefing session for the JICA Grassroots Technical Cooperation Project (Grassroots Cooperation Support Type) “Greening Activities with Organic Waste in Niamey Metropolitan Area of Republic of Niger,” was held. The project started in September 2021, and selected three areas, total of 10.8 hectares in the Niamey Metropolitan where the soil degradation was especially serious. The project fenced off these areas as greening sites, and transported 1,396 tons of urban waste with the cooperation of the Niamey Cleaning Bureau. Of this amount, about 100 tons were transported by TOYOTA Dyna, a truck the project has privately purchased.

In July 2023, a political upheaval occurred, forcing us to suspend project activities. However, with the cooperation of our counterpart, the Ministry of Environment and the Fight against Desertification Niger (ME/LCD), the sites constructed by the project is now four times larger than originally planned, and the amount of waste transported has been 2.8 times larger than originally planned. In May 2023, the Minister of ME/LCD visited the site and recognized the importance of this project in combating desertification as well as the effective use of abandoned waste in the capital Niamey.

Thanks to well collaborated effort by the ME/LCD, local residents, project staff, and JICA staff, we were able to complete this three years project.
